Air Pollution

Cambodia has a rapidly growing industry and due to the quick growth, air quality is beginning to get worse. There are many Carbon Dioxide emissions as well due to due to vehicles, especially in the city of Phnom Penh. The high demand for transportation in Cambodia, especially in the areas with high populations, has led to the increase of air pollution.

The desire for electricity throughout Cambodia is also very prominent and many places even run on generators which unfortunately contribute to the air pollution problem that they are facing.

In addition, there is a problem with dust pollution. The transport of particulate matter throughout Cambodia is not handled correctly and is adding to the air pollution.

Interestingly enough, many officials are concerned how the temples located near and in one of the main cities, Siem Reap, are effected by the air pollution. Cambodia gets a lot of money every year from tourists who wish to visit Angor Wat and the other historical sites, however the particles and gases polluting the air are beginning to darken and soil the previously mentioned sites.

The Cambodian Ministry of Environment’s Department of Pollution Control has started to create air quality standards to help with lessening the air pollution. The Cambodian government has also been receiving help from other, international governments and organizations. Soon, the standards will hopefully be created and well-enforced to help improve the air quality in Cambodia, and more particularly in the larger cities.
