Population

For centuries, the population of Cambodia has been relatively small. During the Cambodian Civil War, also known as the Cambodian Genocide, there were also many casualties. However, just recently with the rapid industrialization of the city, the population has begun to grow very fast.

In the cities there are obviously more people per square kilometer. However, the majority of Cambodia has usually “22 persons per square kilometer.” – country studies

Cambodia is currently in stage two of demographic transition.

The current growth size is going to be extremely difficult to sustain, however, with the rapid growth of the economy and industry, hopefully the rapid growth of the population will be sustainable in the future.

As of now (2016), there is no national population strategy.

Something that will definitely impact the population in the future will be the habitat loss/destruction that has been occurring in Cambodia. It will be harder to produce food to sustain all the people due to the extreme soil degradation.

Currently, many Cambodians (the population) is effected by the quality of the water and the means of getting quality food. Many citizens are extremely malnourished.

In addition, (as previously mentioned) the Cambodian genocide effected the overall population of Cambodia tremendously. The Pol Pot regime was responsible for killing around 2.5 million people.
